Obesity in children has reached epidemic proportions. Croatian statistics show that 31.2% of boys and 20.6% of girls at the age of 11 are overweight or obese. Since obesity is a multidimensional problem, it is necessary to approach it at multiple levels and with multidisciplinary therapeutic options.<\/span><\/p>

Each child who is diagnosed with obesity should be approached individually with the mandatory involvement of parents in the treatment process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A multidisciplinary<\/span><\/span>approach to the treatment of<\/span><\/span>obesity in children<\/span><\/span><\/h3> <\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Scientific research and clinical practice show that an effective approach to treating obesity in children is the so-called lifestyle therapy through a group support program that includes monitoring by a multidisciplinary team of experts. The program includes children and their parents who, through initial individual diagnostic examinations and measurements, and then through participation in several monthly periodic meetings in a support group, go through the process of transforming life habits.<\/span><\/p>

The program was designed by experts with many years of experience in this field, Prof. Ph.D. Milivoj Jovan\u010devi\u0107, paediatrician and prof. Darija Vrane\u0161i\u0107 Bender, nutritionist.<\/strong> A psychologist, kinesiologist, nurse and pediatric endocrinologist are also involved in the implementation of this programme.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What obesity group<\/span><\/span>therapy looks like<\/span><\/span><\/h3> <\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The group support intervention program lasts 3 months, after the implementation of initial diagnostic procedures and a comprehensive assessment. Children are organised in groups of 6-8 participants, according to age limits, with the participation of one or both parents. The workshops are held once a week for the first month and then on a biweekly basis.<\/span><\/p>

This is followed by a period of continuous monitoring and evaluation, according to the individual needs of the child.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    • Knowing the basic facts<\/strong> about the medical aspects of obesity<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • <\/span>New knowledge about proper nutrition<\/strong> and the functioning of the regime within a unique family dynamic, everything about preparing balanced meals, controlling portions, reading declarations on food products (appropriate for the child’s age, with the participation of parents);<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • <\/span>Adopting new habits<\/span><\/strong> such as goal setting, self-monitoring, stimulus control and coping skills to manage emotions and stress. Apart from that, taking up fun and attractive physical activities adapted to children’s interests and abilities;<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • <\/span>Continuous evaluation of program participants<\/span><\/strong> (monitoring of body weight, BMI, body composition, blood pressure, lipid profile and other relevant health indicators over time);<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • <\/span>Monitoring changes in eating habits, physical activity levels<\/span><\/strong>, screen time and sedentary behavior through self-assessment, activity records and expert observation;<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • <\/span>Establishment of long-term monitoring protocols for stable body mass<\/strong>, relapse prevention and permanent behavioral change.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

      By integrating diagnostics, educational content, and evaluation measures, a multidisciplinary group therapy program can effectively contribute to the treatment of childhood obesity and promote long-term health and well-being.<\/p>
