The first and controlcheck-up by anotorhinolaryngologist specialist

The otorhinolaryngological check-up includes a detailed analysis of the child’s health condition, adapted to the individual needs of each patient. During the check-up, the otolaryngologist specialist will talk with the child and parents in order to determine the problems, their duration and history of the disease.

During the check-up of the otorhinolaryngologist at the Salvea Polyclinic, a close examination of the ears will be performed under the control of a microscope (if it is necessary to clean the ears and record the findings in digital form), and the front part of the nose, nasal shells and septum (frontal rhinoscopy), as wella as the oral cavity, oropharynx (oropharyngoscopy) and palpation of neck nodes will be examined.

Fiberendoscopy ofthe nose and throat

Fiberendoscopy is considered the “gold standard” in the diagnosis of adenoid vegetations, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing and nasal obstructions in children.

Fiberendoscopy is a necessary test for specific disorders in children, because this is the only way we can:

  • visualize the patency of the back of the nose,

  • determine the existence of problems in the area of the nasopharynx,

  • examine the base of the tongue and tongue tonsils,

  • determine the size and location of adenoid vegetations (the so-called “third tonsil”),

  • determine the appearance and mobility of the vocal cords.

Fiberendoscopy enables precise diagnosis. The examination is performed with a camera that gently passes through the nostrils all the way through the pharynx up to the level of the vocal cords, giving us a view of the internal structures of the child’s throat and nose.

This examination can be carried out in children from the earliest age – already from birth. Considering that children sometimes feel fear and discomfort during the check-up, our medical team will ensure that the child feels comfortable upon arrival at the clinic and during the procedure. The children can also take their favourite toys and stuffed animals with them to keep them company.

It is recommended that this procedure be performed on an empty stomach.

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is used as a method of testing middle ear ventilation in children and newborns, when specific changes in the middle ear are suspected. Tympanometry is a painless and non-invasive method of measuring air pressure in the middle ear with the prerequisite that the child does not have perforation or damage to the eardrum and secretion from the ear. This test shows the mobility of the eardrum, the presence or absence of fluid in the middle ear, and the presence or absence of cochleostapedial reflexes.

The examination is performed by placing a small probe with a silicone plug in the child’s ear, the size of which is adapted to the child’s ear canal. A slight pressure passes through the probe into the ear canal, and the resulting curve shows the pressure in the middle ear.

Microscopicear cleansing

You probably know that cleaning your ears with sticks can cause more harm than good. When cleaning children’s ears with sticks, cerumen or ear wax is often pushed deeper into the ear canal, which can lead to a blocked ear. That’s why experts advise that ear cleaning be left to specialist otolaryngologists. This is especially important if the child suffers from frequent infections.

A microscopic ear toilet is available at the Salvea Polyclinic. The procedure is performed when it is necessary to clean the ear, but it is also often indispensable as a preparation for examining the child’s ears.

A microscopic examination of the ears is carried out before certain examinations to facilitate diagnosis, because in children it is necessary to visualize at least ¾ of the eardrum in order to establish a diagnosis with certainty (eg in case of acute ear infection).

The procedure is most often performed with the help of a cerumen dissolving spray. After the cerumen softens, aspiration pumps are used to clean the ears painlessly under the control of a microscope with higher magnification.

Frenulotomy (incision inthe frenulum)

A shortened lingual frenulum in newborns and infants can lead to difficulty feeding. Feeding difficulties are not only unpleasant for the child, but can be painful and frustrating for the mother.

In order to help the child, the Frenulum incision service is available at the Salvea Polyclinic.

In the case of a child with a feeding disorder due to a short frenulum, the procedure should be performed as soon as possible.

The procedure is usually performed without local anesthesia as a quick incision of the connective tissue, and the recovery itself is very fast, so the child will be able to eat without any problems after a few hours.

Ear/pharynx/nose swab

In case of a sore throat, breathing problems or suspected ear infection, it is possible to swab the ear, throat or nose.

It is a non-invasive procedure by which the content collected on a sterile cotton swab is sent for microbiological analysis. Determining the presence of bacteria is extremely important for proper and timely prescribing of antibiotics but also for preventing the development of resistance to antibiotics if they are not needed. Swabs of the ear, throat and nose are of particular importance in infections that do not respond to empiric antibiotics and/or require a change of antibiotic.
